FIVE INJURED

VAN;STRIKES POST SWERVE TO AVOID CHILDREN A BOY SERIOUSLY HURT ACCIDENT AT BALMORAL Five people were injured when a van in attempting to avoid two children crossing the street, swerved on to the footpath and struck a telegraph pole in Balmoral Road shortly alter eight o'clock last night. The injured persons were: —Robert "William Thoinas / McLaren, aged 8, IS4 Balmoral Boad; Miss Annie Marion McKeown, aged 25, 536 Manukau Road, Epsom; Mrs. R. Shields, 81 Burnley Terrace, Sandringham; Malcolm Shields, aged 3, son of Mrs. Shields; Mr. C. P. Macken, 14 Brewster Avenue, Mount Albert. The van'was proceeding west along Balmoral Road toward Dominion Road when two children appeared directly in front. The driver swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid them, But McLaren was struck, the other child escaping. The van hit a telegraph pole after mounting the footpath, the rear of the vehicle striking a concrete gate-post of the Balmoral police station. The driver escaped unhurt, but his four passengers, Miss McKeown, Mrs. Shields, her infant son, and Mr. Macken, with McLaren, were removed to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance. The telephone wires leading to the police station wore brought down by the impact. McLaren and Miss McKeown were admitted to hospital, but the ether three were able to proceed to their homes after treatment in the casualty department. Miss McKeown received injuries to the right knee. McLaren suffered concussion, and his condition is serious.
