COUNCIL PROBLEM

10AN ANTICIPATED" 7; BUILDING OF A HOUSE ; v ONEHUNGA BOROUGH AFFAIRS - • Tji anticipation of raising a ; waterworks loan of £1.5.100, t!ie Onehunga •. ; Borough Council , some weeks ago com- 1 menced the erection of an engineer's " ? residence adjoining the pumping station" to cost £llOO. A letter was read to / the council last night from the Local Government Loans -Board, directing' that the cost of the engineer's house V must be deleted from the amount of . the proposed loan, as no expenditure ■ of loan money was permitted until the loan was approved by the ratepayers. The council decided to reply that the »■ : house may not be completed for some time and that it intends to try to obtain special legislation authorising any expenditure incurred prior to tho" • loan being placed before the ratepayers. A request from tho Onehunga School Committee for a supply of water for tho proposed school swimming bath at a reduced rate was considered by' tho Onehunga "Borough Council last night. The engineer, Mr. 1?. D. Baker, reported that an average of 1000 gallons. * would be required daily. It was decided to grant an allowance of 500 gallons per pupil a year, any excess used to be charged at the rate of 6d a 1000 gallons. Permission to screen pictures on the evening of Christinas Day rrfts granted the proprietors of the two theatres in Onelnmga. Mr. \V. J. Moore entered hi:-- objection on the ground that theatre employees would be called upon to work that night. The engineer, Mr. P, • D. Baker, mentioned that for some time past tho quality of the water from the Te ' Papa pa wells had left something to-ba desired. After chlorination, he. stated,it was quite safe, but cloudy. Hesug- , gested that it should be filtered, the' installation of the necessary plant costing from £B6O for an auxiliary filter to £IO2O for an open-air gravity type. Authority was given in the meantime to investigate during the summer the capacity of the springs in the vicinity of the main wells in Rome Street. Tho water there is of a much better quality than that obtained at the Te Pa papa springs, and it meets with all the requirements of the Department.
