CLEAR DEMAND
DANZIG AND CORRIDOR r f —— —- REFUSAL TO NEGOTIATE ROOSEVELT'S FINAL EFFORT / REPORTED CONFERENCE PLAN By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright I Independent Cablo Service (Received August 28. 0.30 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 28 Rejecting in a letter to the French Prime Minister, M. Daladier, the latter's appeal of last Friday for one more direct bid for peace, says a message from Berlin, Herr Hitler said: "I have made the clear demand that Danzig and the Corridor must return to Germany. I see no means of moving Poland to a peaceful solution, as she feels she cannot be attacked under the protection of her guarantors. " 1 would have little hope of an honourable future for my people if, under such circumstances, we were not determined to solve these questions one way or another. If fate then forces our two nations to fight, it would be from different motives—l would fight with my people to rectify a wrong, and others would fight to maintain that injustice. I believe Poland would suffer most, because, regardless of the outcome of the war, the Polish State would be obliterated one way or another."
It is stated that President Roosevelt is prepared to make a final dramatic move for peace within 24 hours provided that all the South American Republics and M. Stalin, the Soviet Dictator, agree to back an appeal to Herr Hitler for an immediate world economic and disarmament conference, says the Washington correspondent of the New York Daily News. The British Government, adds the correspondent, is reported confidentially to have placed the text of its reply to Herr Hitler in Mr. Roosevelt's hands.
