FIFTY YEARS AGO
FRUIT FOR UNITED STATES The possibility of opening a'market for Australian and New Zealand fruit in the United States was receiving attention 50 years ago. The following appeared in the New Zealand Hebald of August 22, ISS9: "For some time past a great deal of interest has been taken in the prospect of sendingpprofitably to San Francisco a quantity of our" ever-increasing abundance of fruit. The more tlio subject is investigated by those who have the necessarjf knowledge to give an opinion the lhoro it leads to the belief that the matter is not only feasible but also practicable with ordinary care. Tho import value of duty-paying fruit, into the United States last year shows a large shortage of production an evidences the market for Australian and New Zealand fruit."
