MINER SENT TO PRISON
ASSAULT ON TAXI-DRIVER WOMAN HURT IN ACCIDENT [by TKLEGiurn —rrtKss association] DUNEDIN. Monday The spirit of chivalry was put forward b.v counsel in the Police Court in extenuation of an assault on a taxidriver by Patrick Rogers, aged 30, a Kaitangata. miner. Ho alleged the driver of the taxi insulted defendant's female companion. The police stated it was an aggravated assault in disgraceful conditions. Accused and the woman had been drinking in a hotel until they were requested to leave on account of their boisterous conduct. In response to a. call the taxi inn n arrived and the pair embarked, together with a suitcase containing liquor and a demijohn ol beer. An argument arose during the drive over the fare, but the woman * Accused, objecting to the settlement, struck the driver, forciim him from Ins seat until he fell in the roadway, the taxi careered on, accused jumping out. hut the woman going over a bank with the car and suffering a fracture of the skull. Fven after the accident accused persisted in his attacks. Accused was sent to gaol for three weeks.
