FIRE DESTROYS BARN

HEAVY LOSS CAUSED I OUTBREAK NEAR ROTORUA POLICE MAKE AN ARREST [by telegraph—owx correspondent] ROTORUA, Sunday Damage estimated at several hundreds of pounds was caused yesterday afternoon when fire destroyed a large hay barn and implement shed on the farm owned by Mr. H. Hardcastle, of Old Taupo Road, near Rotorua. The shed contained several tons of hay and all implements used on the farm, including two tractors, hay presses, ploughs, mowing and fertiliser machines. All except two tractors, which were pushed out, were destroyed or damaged by the flames. Compelled to pump water from the Utuhina Stream, some hundreds of yards away, the Rotorua fire brigade did excellent work saving the sharemilker's cottage adjoining the barn. Mr. Hardcastle is at present overseas.

As a result of inquiries made by the police a man was arrested this afternoon.
