"SHOWDOWN" NEAR REPORTS IN AMERICA APPEASEMENT UNPOPULAR THREE POWERS CONCERNED By Telegraph—Press Associntion—Copyright (.Received August 18, 6.25 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 17 Diplomatic reports indicating that Europe is approaching a "showdown" have been wirelessed to President Roosevelt, who is on a cruise on board a destroyer off the coast of Nova Scotia, says the Washington correspondent of the New York Times. The reports state that British, French and Polish public opinion continues to run strongly against appeasement. Jt is anticipated that if there is a serious development Mr. Roosevelt and the Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, who is also on holiday, will return to Washington immediately.
