Driving Trap On Great South Road

REPAIRS AT OTOROHANGA Caution is still called for in negotiating a portion of the Great South-Road in the vicinity of Otorohanga. This section of the highway is at present under reconstruction, and while one stretch of the old metal road, which has been maintained, is equal to the best paved surfaco, another piece furthor on is a veritable driving trap in wet weather. • In spite of the recent stormy weather that stretch of the old roadway from Kiokio to Otorohanga is in surprisingly good condition. However, at its southern extremity, where it halts on account of extensive road works, it resembles nothing better than, a pig wallow. No car gets through this part nowadays without being spattered with mud from top to bottom. Owing to bad visibility, the road at this point is also dangerous. There is only a one-way routo for a distance of about 300 yds. Midway along this muddy path there is a sharp bend, which will ultimately disappear, but in the meantime motorists are unknowingly inveigled to enter both ends together, and when they meet at the corner it becomes necessary for one or the other whichever is the more courteous —to back out and let the other man through.
