COLD AND SQUALLY' WINDS OF GALE FORCE The. weather report and forecast for New Zealand issued by the Government meteorologist last evening were as follows: s General Situation. —Pressure is verv low to the south-east and high to the 1 ' north-west. Auckland Province: —Strong and squally westerly winds, reaching gale force in places. The weather i* likely to be cool and changeable, with passing showers and bright intervals. Possibly some hail. Seas rough off shore on the east coast, and rough to high on the west, coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —Strong westerly to southwesterly weather was experienced. Heavy rain squalls, accompanied bv • hail, fell in the morning, but conditions later improved. The maximum temperature was 55 degrees, and the minimum 44 degrees. Barometric pressure rose slightly. Barometer, midnight 29.59 in. (1002 millibars) Midnight, Sunday 29.50 in, (999 millibari) Wellington.—The day was sunny, hut cool, with a fresh north-westerly breeze. Christchurch. —The day was fine and sunnj', with a cold fresh breeze from the south-west. The maximum temperature was 48.3 degrees. The barometer at 5 p.m. was falling slowly at 29.234 in. ! (990 millibars).

Dunedin.—The sun shone brightly and the snow which fell overnight soon melted. A eold fresh south-west breeze prevailed and the temperature did not rise above 41 degrees. The barometer read 29.80 in.
