SHIP DESERTER
SEAMAN CONVICTED TWO WEEKS' IMPRISONMENT "No master likes to engage a man who has broken a contract before," said an official of the New Zealand Shipping Company in the Police Court yesterday, when a seaman, John Craig Biggins, was charged with deserting from the liner Rotorua on -March 130. ''There arc many deserters on the waterfront now looking for jobs." he continued. "They are in a difficult position, as they have neither books nor papers." Accused stated that, as ho had left some clothes on board, he was not a deserter. He had suffered much from ill-health during the past few months, and had obtained some employment. "You had plenty of time to report to the company that you had been unable to catch your ship," said the magistrate, Mr. J. Morling, "in which case no action would have been taken." Accused was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment.
