TROTTING CARNIVAL

ROCKS AHEAD EFFECTS SURPRISE i ■ KING'S PLAY WINS DECISIVELY I defeat of favourites [BT TELKGItArn—FROM ARCHER] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday Good dividends were a feature of the trotting at Addington to-day, three of the winners—Rocks Ahead, Gracie Fields and Mute —paying double figures. The greatest surprise of all was the victory of: Rocks Ahead in the August Handicap, in which she scored decisively from Graham Direct, who was also an outsider. The former Aucklander, Mute, gave one of his best performances in winning the Stewards' Handicap from another outsider, Pilot Peter, the pair having the race practically to themselves. The fastest winning time of the day for two miles was registered by Great Divide, who, went 4.29 3-5 in the Trial Handicap, in which as a result the stake was increased from £3OO to £550. Great Divide was well driven by M. C. McTigue, who also won the International Handicap with King's Play. The trainer F. P. Brosnan also had two winners, Token and Marsceres, both of whom were well handled by G. McKendry. Marsceres was the only each-way favourite to succeed and'he was at short odds on both machines. The finishing effort of Marsceres was one of the most striking of the day in his present form he may soon win again.
