DAIRY FACTORY COSTS
Sir, —In the Herald of August 3 Sir J. G. Barclay, M.P., writes:—"lt i.true that butter boxes have risen in price considerably." We of the dairy industrv know that, to our sorrow. At the annual rtieeting of the RaW para Dairy Company last month the chairman told the meeting that- white pine butter boxes cost 2s 2£d in Helensville, whereas white pine butter boxes were manufactured in Australia from timber imported from New Zealand and sold there at Is 8d each. : V>
The chairman also informed us, and it was substantiated by the balancesheet, that, while our production-had decreased by almost 10 per. cent, our costs had risen by £'2400 last year. Is it any wonder that Hie number of cows milked is decreasing each year and the number of suppliers becoming fewer? This alarming state of affairs is undoubtedly caused by unduly high cost.and lack of labour, notwithstanding tlxfact that some of our M.P.'s ar£ii> otherwise. P. R. Gabdneh
