RACING INVESTMENTS FIGURES FOR 1938-39 AUCKLAND'S LONG LEAD The now racing season comes in today under happy auspices. Investments on the totalisator at'nearly all meetings held last season showed an. upward trend, and many clubs have carried out or inaugurated plans for improvements and expansion Auckland district again had a commanding lead in racing finance, the aggregate investments being £2,094,408 10s out of tho total £5,802,871 10s wagered at galloping meetings throughout tho Dominion. Its proportion of stakes, including trophies, was' £130,019, against £399,000 10s offered by all clubs. - This shows tho percentage of investments at over 36, but tho porcentago of prizes is under 33, indicating that tho clubs are still budgeting conservatively within foreseen limits.

Tho Wellington district, of which tho mainstay is Trentham, compiled the very good total of £962,002 in investments and distributed £56,137 in prizes. McCARTEN'S 115 WINS MR. E. J. WATT LEADING OWNER SYDNEY, July 31 The full tally of the jockey M. MoCarten for the season just closed was 115 wins, including 27 at Newcastle, Melbourne and Brisbane. With a total of £9565, Mr. E, J. Watt heads tho list of winning owners for the season in New South Wales. Ho has now won £239,537 in stakes in his 40 years as an owner and is the largest winning owner in the history of Australian racing.

MELBOURNE RIDERS H. BADGER HEADS LIST MELBOURNE, July 31 For the first time in his career H. Badger headed the list of winning jockeys in Melbourne, riding 48 winners and ono dead-beat. A. Dewhurst was second with 42 wins, and W. Elliott third with 36 wins. W. Burke was the most successful trainer with 28 successes, F. Hoysted being second with 20, and F. Musgravo third with 16.

ARANUI SHOWS FORM MOONEE VALLEY VICTORY Aranui, who won the second division of the Cooee Handicap, two-year-olds, at Moonee Valley, Melbourne, on Saturday, was purchased as a yearling by his former owner-trainer, P. T. Ilogan, for 2-10 guineas. Ilogan took him to Australia last spring, and won a juvenile event at Caulfield with iiiiii. On liis return Aranui did not win in New Zealand, but ran prominently in the Champagne and Challenge Stakes at Riccarton last Easter, and shortly

afterwards Air. J. Richardson, of Dunedin, purchased him from Hogan for 500 guineas. When lie won on Saturday Aranui was havjng only his second start since leaving the Dominion and he was at double figures. Aranui was bred by M iss M. U. Lawric, of Palmcrston North, his dam, Cupid's Mark, being by Arrowsmith from Sleeping Beauty, by Boniform from Peace. Cupid's Mark is a half-sister to Palm, also a winner in Australia.

TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP C. G. Goulsbro, who rode Haughty Winner in the Jirabazon Handicap at Kiccarton on Saturday, iias boon engaged to ride him in the Winter Cup.
