YOUNG STOWAWAY
TERM OF IMPRISONMENT EFFORT TO REACH AUSTRALIA Charged with stowing away on the Awn tea at Wellington on July 21, John Henry Cornish, lorry-driver, aged 26, appeared in the Police Court ydsterr day before Mr. J. Morling, S.M. SeniorSergeant Pender said accused had sailed from Wellington to Sydney, where his landing was prohibited, and he had been brought to '■• Auckland. He had given the name of his brother, who was born in Australia, thinking that he would be allowed to land.
Accused sjjid he had acted on the spur of the moment and a friend had suggested that he might find work; for him in Sydney. He asked for an opportunity to refund the expenses incurred by the, shipping company. A representative of the shipping company said much trouble was being experienced with stowaways both from Australia and New Zealand. Accused was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment.
