NEW WOMEN'S CLUB
LECTURE ON SOILS Soil fertility and soil reclamation wan the subject of an interesting addressi given to the New Women's Club by Mrs. Ruby Watson. The president, Mrs., W. B. Darlow, presided. Mrs. Watson expressed the opinion that if the importance of scientific) agriculture were not soon recognised wo should be faced with world-wide starvation. The speaker discussed what had been done by Sir Albert Howard in establishing sewerage farms in England, also his work in tho use of this system on certain tea plantations in India. She . suggested that he should bo invited to visit New Zealand during the Centennial. In urging tho preservation of tho bush, Mrs. Watson mentioned various countries which now had large tracts of desert, because of the destruction of their forests. In. stressing the fact that tho health of a country was found in its soil, she impressed upon her audi: enco tho need for the more general use of organic fertilizers in place of chemical ones. During the afternoon, the monthly report from the National Council of Women was presented by Mrs. J. R-. Boyd, one of the club's delegates. Mrs. F. Allen and Mrs. W. K. Tugby wero hostesses for the afternoon.
