HANDLING COSTS
NEW ZEALAND PORTS ROYAL COMMISSION SOUGHT [by TELEGRAPH —PIIESS association] WELLINGTON, Saturday A remit urging that a Royal Commission should bo appointed to investigate the unsatisfactory* position in regard to shipping facilities for export, with particular attention to the incidence of handling costs at New Zealand ports, was passed at the New Zealand Farmers' Union conference. It was decided to urge also that farmers should have direct representation on all inquiries into waterfront disputes, specially in regard to tho fixing of wages. Another remit stressed the need to encourage young farmers to settle on the land. *A third remit, which was not adopted, suggested that suitable European immigrants should bo encouraged to settle on the land. On tho subject of defence, tho resolution of the conference was that it appreciated the Government's efforts in regard to defence, but strongly urged tho introduction of universal military training.
