FIFTY YEARS AGO

MAIN TRUNK RAIJ.WAY The route to be followed by the Main Trunk railway line between Auckland and Wellington was the subject of much discussion 50 years ago. The following reference to the results of the re-sur-vey of the route was made in the New Zealand Herald of July 10,5 ISB9 "It is understood that the results of the re-survey of the Main Trunk line are unfavourable to the central route. This will probably influence the Government when dealing with the Main Trunk question. The Premier is said to be strongly adverse to dividing the money and spending half at each end, this being, looked upon as practically throwing money away. The proposals which it is believed will be adopted are a continuation of the Auckland hue to the Poro-o-tarao tunnel at a cost of £IOO,OOO, the making of a road to connect the tunnel station with Tarnnaki at a cost of £74,000 (a distance line and road of 116 miles), and finally the purchase of suitable blocks of native land at a cost of about £200,000."
