ONE GIRL KILLED
THREE OTHERS INJURED SISTERS AND COUSINS CAR RUNS INTO BRIDGE SKID ON WET APPROACH [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday Four girls were injured, one of them subsequently dying, when a sedan car crashed into the Heimana Stream bridge, a mile north of Opunake, on the Main South Road, about 4 p. tt . on Saturday. Two of the occupants of the car were sisters and two cousins. They were on their way from Pungarehu to Opunake. The victims were:—
Killed Miss Lillian Marie Doyle, aged 21 daughter of Mrs. Bridget Dovle' of AVarea. '
Injured Miss Ann Doyle, aged 19, daughter of Mr. Thomas Doyle, of Warea; extensive facial injuries and a fractured left forearm. Condition not serious.
Miss Hannah Doodv, aged 26, daughter of Mr. John Doody, of Pungarchu; extensive facial injuries. Condition not serious. Miss Eileen Doody, aged 24, sister of Miss Hannah Doody; superficial abrasions.
After being attended by an Opunake doctor the young women were taken by ambulance to the New Plymouth Hospital, where Miss Lillian Doyle died just before midnight. Miss" Eileen Doody, the driver of the car, was discharged from hospital to-day. Heavy rain shortly before the accident had left the road greasy. Apparently the car skidded at the top of the approach to the bridge, crashing headlong into the wing on the wrong side of the road.
