PHILISTINES' CLUB

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY HAPPY CELEBRATIONS DANCING AND ENTERTAINMENT The Philistines held high revel on Saturday night, on the occasion of the 21st birthday celebration of their club. The rooms of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society were festively decorated for the party. The stage was banked on each side with palms and bamboo foliage, which made an attractive background for bowls of vivid poinsettias and hydrangeas, while trails of feathery lycopodium linked by clusters of poinsettias decorated the walls of the ballroom.

There was a large attendance of present and past members and their friends, who splint a most enjoyable evening with dancing, interspersed with a varied and entertaining programme. This included a humorous gangster play entitled "Amazons on Broadway," produced by Mr. H. McD. Vincent. The parts were cleverly taken by the following members of the Auckland Repertory Theatre: —Miss Phyllis Beckett, Miss June Talbot, Miss Marie James, Miss Hilda Gooding, Miss Dorothy Taylor, Miss L. Heine, Miss Kathleen Cuttle, Miss Antoinette Gaily, and Miss Monteith. Other items were: — Songs by Miss Sybil Phillipps and Mr. E. J. Thomas; humorous sketches by Mr. Alan McElwain and Miss Anita Webster; flute solos by Mr. H. McLennan; vocal items by the Lyric Quartette. The accompanists were Miss W. Cooke and Mr. A. Boyce. Two highlights of the evening were the unveiling by Miss Vera Ziman of a presidential chair, the society's birthday present to itself, and the cutting of the birthday cake, which was adorned with 21 candles, by Mrs. Nolle Porter. The host and hostess were Mr. and Mrs.'Clifton E. Clarke, the latter wearing a graceful frock of sapphire blue corded taffetas. Members of the ladies' committee present included: —Mrs. H. T.
