IMPRESSIVE WIN

FRESH HORSES' DUEL A. JENKINS IN FINE FORM PROMISE OF SAXON TOR [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Sunday There were one or two impressive victories at Otaki yesterday. Lustral scored a deceive win in tho Pukehou Hurdles. He was several places back in the first half-mile but then moved up very fast and passed tho pacemaker, All Blood, half a mils from home. Erebus put in an appearance and ho was with Lustral at tho last fence, but Lustral finished „the better. Chat put in a great run from a bad position to be a close third.

Lustral jumped exceptionally well and had something in hand at the end. Erebus ran a good race. Chat's performance was impressive.

The first division of the Waikanae Hack Scurry introduced a promising maiden in Saxon Tor. This two-year-old gelding is the first of the stock of Lcighon to win. He is from a sister to the Grand National winner Clarion Call, and in the race he gave nothing else a chance, winning with ease all the way. Liane's Saddle Breaks Mataroa scored decisively in the Timi Kara Handicap, handling the heavy going well. Liane and Mea Mea were well beaten but after being in front for six furlongs Liane's saddle broke and she was compelled to drop out of tho running. Corroboree was interfered with when Liane fell back and he camo on well again for third. Tidewaiter ran a greatly improved race for fourth and he seems to be on the verge of good form again. Lactose beat a poor lot in the Rangiuru Steeplechase, in which the win favourite, Lady Callaghan, ran badly. There was a great duel between Yours Truly and Saki at the finish of tho Taipua Handicap, good horsemanship by A Jenkins getting the former homo. It was the winner's first race since the autumn and Saki's first attempt in open class. Lowenberg was running on into fourth place and ho will do better over a longer journey. The favourite, Matoru, was in front to the straight and then died away. Ho never does well except when he comes from the back. Other fancied failures were Aureus and Lord Moutoa. Favourite Weakens

The win favourite, Wings of Song, looked a certain winner when she passed Classforra in the lead in the Second Division of the Waikanae Hack Scurry, but she weakened badly and Classform came on to win from Peach King, who also finished better than Wings of Song Outsiders in Larwood and Girl Pat came home in front of the favourite, Colonel Bogey, in the Ohau Handicap but Larwood badly bored over on Colonel Bogey at the top of the straight. There was money for Haupongi, but his prominence was shortlived. El Meynell was restive at the barrier and was completely left. The win of Colincamps in the Tainui Handicap was a solid performance, as after beginning well he dropped back several lengths and had a deal of ground to make up. Shining Hours and Liberal Mint were the leaders but Colincamps finished very resolutely and won going away. He is still eligible for the Trial Plate at Trentham. The effort of Shining Hours in trying to win all the way was good and apparently she is ready for Trentham again next month.

SOUTHLAND STABLES FOXLOVE LEADING WINNER SPANISH LAD FOR WINTER CUP [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN INVERCARGILL, Sunday Astral Flash is still in training, and it is possible she will do some further racing this season before being returned to the stud. Foxlove has returned to Invercargill, but he will be spelled until next season. He has made a good recovery from the leg injury he sustained at Wanganui. He is tho leading stakewinner among the Southland horses this season with £1435. He won seven races and was placed on seven other occasions, including second in the Invercargill Cup and Riverton Cup.

Fleet Street and his stable-mate, Bow Street, are to race at Trentham. Fleet Street has done well since the Wingatui meeting, and will have to bo reckoned with in his engagements, as he is a brilliant beginner and can handle any sort of going. Bow Street has done nothing in the south to warrant an optimistic view of his prospects, but he is at home in heavy going. Spanish Lad has made good progress since the Dunedin meeting, and is to race at lliccartou in August, when his mission will ho the Winter Cup. The last Southland-trained horse to win the Winter Cup was Magdala in 1912, but the province has not often been represented in this race. Spanish Lad can run a merry mile. He has the ability to get a good position early and to hold it. Burwood Schools Brilliantly <

Bur wood lias done some brilliant schooling over the big fences at Invercargill. The Woodend gelding was a very consistent performer last winter, and he should add to his record before the steeplechase season concludes. He lias been nominated for tho Grand National Steeplechase and other events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting. Although he has not raced this winter, he goes best when fresh. Gold Wron and Pandine, who have been at Wingatui since the Dunedin meeting, left for Trentham last Monday. Gold Wren has been nicely weighted in tho Wellington Steeplechase. However, the Trentham lences are not likely to suit him as well as the Riccarton country, over which he has an unbeaten record in three starts. Pandine will not appear until tho second or third day > of the Wellington meeting. His injured leg has responded to treatment, and lie will have to be reckoned with in his engagements. Both horses will be ridden bv W Shand

Tangled Retired from Racing Southland stables are represented in tho nominations for the Grand National Steeplechase by Black Banner, Gold Wron, Pandine and Burwood. Tangled has seen the last of the race track. He has been at Riverton since Raster, but has been too unsound to train, and is now being used as a hack on Mr W. T. Hazlett's property at Taramoa. J. A. Rowland has Aspire and Blissful Lady in light work at Invercargill.A recent addition to his team is the rising three-year-old chestnut gelding !iv Nigger Minstrel from Fairy Dart, thus full brother to Fairy Yama, who raced once from the stable this season. Blissful Lady has not thickened out during her winter spell, but Aspire has done particularly well. The former Gore apprentice, S. T. Phillips, is now attached to Rowland's stable.
