WINTER ATHLETICS
AUCKLAND AND UNIVERSITY INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS The first of a series of three competitions between teams representing the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club and tho Auckland University Athletic Club was held in the Domain on Saturday. The contests were for A, B and C grade teams of eight men a-side, in steeplechases of 3000 yds, 4000 yds and OOOOyds. The University learns proved too good for their opponents, winning the A grade steeplechase with a score of 12 points to Auckland's 27. University also won the B grade with a score of 12 to Auckland's 31, and the C grade by 15 points to Auckland's 24. The total points for the three contests were:—University, 39; Auckland, 82. Results were as follows: — A Grade (GOOOyds).—Stephenson went out ahead early in the race, and was joined by Ball on the third round. These'two rarcd together on the fourth and fifth round, but on the final lap Stephenson drew ahead to win by OO.vds from Ball. McKimen. McKenzie, Barker. Harden, Evans. French and Mathieson. Tho winner's time was 22m 455, with Ball 22m 555. and McKinven 23m. B Grade (1000yds).—McLeod went into the lead on the second lay, and stayed there to the finish. He improved his lead on the third round from Collins, and won by nearly 200 yds. Respinger, Green, McCutcheon, Lynds, Woodhead. Dunn, J. F. Smith wero next. Tho winner's time was 15m ss. G Grade (3000yds).—nuglnll won by 7oyds from N. Stephenson. Jones, Hammond and Cutler, with the others close up. The winner's time was 11m 355. ■ The president of the Auckland Club, Mr. W Morton, congratulated the University Club on its success. Mr. Julius Hogben, president of the Univeisity Club, wished tho Auckland team success at their next meeting.
