£IOOO TO BE PAID OUT INTERPRETATION OF AWARDS [BY TELEGRAM —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] DUNEDIN. Friday Tho sum of £IOOO will bo paid as arrears of wages by coal distributors as a result of the judgment of Mr. J. A. Gilmour, the industrial magistrate, in tho caso in which tho Bruce Coal Company was proceeded against for breath of tho award in failing to make payment for hours over 40 as prescribed. It was explained that the action was not particularly against the company named. All coal distributors were implicated. Two awards were involved, tho drivers and the eoalyard labourers', the latter covering drivers, so that where tho drivers' award was not amended it was claimed overtime should be paid over 40 hours. For the defendant it was said tho companies had acted in ignoranco of tho cumulative effect of the two awards. Tho magistrate, recording tho breach without penalty, remarked that defendant acted under a genuino misapprehension.
