READERS' EXCHANGE

PAINT ON OVERALLS The formidable array of cleansing agents already uspd by. last week's inquirer to restore paint-stained overalls to their pristine-whiteness lias apparently discouraged housewives from offering suggestions, for M.H. is tho only one to answer. According to her, equal parts of beilzine and ammonia are good; also equal parts of methylated spirit, ammonia and ether, but it is doubtful if you could obtain the latter. The overalls should be soaked in the mixture selected for some time, and then washed in soap and water softened with borax. A little pipeclay in the rinsing water will help to bleach the garment. The older the stains the more difficult it is, of course, to remove them. Generally, one part turps to two of methylated spirit is enough to remove any paint stains soaked in it, and equal parts of turps and ammonia are likewise effective. Again, no paint can resist chloroform, but this is likewise difficult to get and needs, to be used very carefully, or you may chloroform yourself! Rubbing with eucalyptus oif is splendid for removing paint, but in the case of overalls it would be a very tedious, job. . ...- Another suggestion of M.H.'s is to slake, lib., quick-limo with one gallon boiling water, add lib washing .soda, ..and soak tho overall in this Jiot solution for a few minutes. A good scrubbing then with some of the solution and a soft brush should get off all the stains. But this would perish the material if used too often. In using benzine, etc., do bo careful to do it in the open air away from fires. Request Will Mrs. M.8., who wanted to know where to get green walnuts, please send a stamped addressed envelope for a letter containing the desired information?
