PIE-CART EPISODE
INSULT AND ASSAULT Two charges .arising from an episode at a city pie-cart on the evening of April after a military parade were heard in the Police Court yesterday. .James Francis Lol'tus (Mr. Robinson) admitted having used insulting language, and .Jack Jtiriccvich admitted having assaulted Loftus. Kvitlence was given that Juricevich had been praising the British Kmpire, for which, although a foreigner, he had fought during the Great War, He also spoke of the necessity for preparedness in the event of an attack on New Zealand. Loft us then interrupted, it was stated, anil insulted both the Kmpire and .Itiricevich. He had been starved while working on British sliips, he said. He swore at .Juricevich. .Juricevich, who pleaded extreme provocation, then struck Loftus on the moii t li.
The magistrate, .Mr. ,J. Morling, lined Loftus UI and ordered him to pay costs. .Juricevich was convicted and discharged.
