ALBERT STREET AUCKLAND The.St. John Fleet of Dodge Ambulances in Auckland now Numbers Seventeen. Corner WALL AND STATION ROADS, PENROSE MISS DOROTHY WOOD. The dedication by Archbishop Averill of a travelling hospital at the Auckland Cenotaph to-morrow afternoon brings a happy fruition to a generous effort by members of the Happiness Club and their director, Miss Dorothy Wood, and adds to the facilities of the Auckland St. John Ambulance Association emergency equipment that should quickly prove its usefulness. The Happiness Club was formed on April 21, 1938. Its membership now is 6400,. with branches in all parts of the Auckland Province, and with members as far removed as Kaitaia and Nelson. The club seems to have been appropriately named, since not only does it bring pleasure to those who might otherwise be denied it, but it already has been the means of helping good causes. Early in January last Miss Wood telephoned Mr. S. E. Langstone, secretary-manager of the St. John Ambulance Association, to say that under the aegis of the Farmers' Trading Company, Limited, the club wished to forward in some manner the work of the association, and inquired the direction in which this could best be done. Mr. Langstone, in collaboration with members of his committee, decided to say a travelling hospital, or ambulance trailer as it is more generally known, was needed. Within two months the club had organised a twoday fair at the Town Hall for the purpose of raising funds, and at the final accounting it was found that £925 would be available for the association's purposes. An order was immediately given to Tanners Trailers, Limited, for the building of an ambulance trailer, which is the first of its kind in the Dominion. In this way the Happiness Club celebrated its first birthday. The trailer, which will be drawn by an ambulance, is completely equipped for the performance of emergency operations. Its apparatus includes, among other things, Queen Charlotte gas and oxygen apparatus, a complete unit for the service of blood transfusions, a full-sized operating table of the latest design, bottled gas for heating water, electric fans and sterilisers, and two beds. The body of the trailer itself is 16ft. 6in. long and Bft. wide, with sufficient height for the average person to walk upright. Its dedication by Archbishop Averill will take place at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow in the presence of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and officers of the St. John Ambulance organisation, the actual ceremony occupying about 15 minutes. Two bands, the Auckland City Boys' Band and the Waterside Workers' Band, will take part. Since Sunday is the day on which the St. John Ambulance organisations will hold their annual church parade, it is fitting that the dedication of the trailer given by the Happiness Club should take place on the same day. Members of the association council have expressed their gratitude to the club, whose members made possible the raising of a large sum of money for the buying of a gift that will add greatly to the efficiency of the ambulance service in the Auckland district.
