SOUTH-WEST AFRICA NATIVE HEADMAN RECALLS [FROM OCT! OWN C'OIMU:RPONT)ENT] JOHANNESBURG. May If, An interesting address was delivered at Umtata by Headman Hosea Kutako. from South-west Africa. He spoke about the war of 1901-190 G. when his people were conquered by the Germans and the harsh treatment they received from the Germans. "Thev took away our cattle as well as our properties," lie said, "We were only labourers, even the women and children." The headman spoke of the constructive policy of the "good Fnion Government.." and said he realised that the Administration was .doing its utmost for the natives. He spoke in glowing terms of the educational facilities allowed. He also paid tribute to the British Government .The goorl feeling between the natives and Kuropeans was evidenced, he said, hv the debates at the Native Council. He praised the work done by the Union Government for the natives, particularly in regard to agriculture.
