ENCROACHMENT OF SAND
PREVENTIVE MEASURES GOOD RESULTS IN NORTH [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] WHANGAItEI, Friday Appreciation of the work being carried out to combat tho encroachment of sand on fcrtilo lands in tho North, and tho development mado possible by utilising preventive measures, was expressed by members of tho No. 1 District Highways Council at a meeting in Whangarei to-day. Mr. 11. Coates (Otamatoa) said that the planting of tho sand dunes, if continued, would create a groat national asset. The chairman, Mr. 11. H. Packwood, district engineer of tho Public Works Department, said the work was being carried out in various parts of tho North. Thero wero many thousands of acres to bo dealt with. Tho work checked tho advance of tho dunes, which woro seriously menacing already productivo farm lands. Mr. L. J. Matthews (Mangonui) said that, when planted, tho land provided good grazing instead of being a sandy waste. Marram grass and lupins wero planted, and when tho lupins died off. they provided humus and laid tho foundations of good soil.
