WAIPA MEETING

INTEREST IN JUMPERS

W. G. PARK STEEPLES

DISCUSSION OF PROSPECTS

KEEN CONTEST EXPECTED

BY ARCHER Features of the Waipa Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Te Awamutu on Saturday .should bo the three jumping events, tho W, G. Park Steeplechase, tho Oraluiu Hurdles and the Andrew Kay Memorial Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. Chief interest will bo centred in the W. G. Park Steeplechase, which has attracted a fine field of IG. The performer Krination is lopweight with 11.13 and that may not be prohibitive for a horse of his class. With 11.11 he ran third in the Great Northern Hurdles and with 11.13 ho filled tho same position in the Remuera Hurdles at Ellerslic, efforts which showed that ho is in good form. Most of his recent, racing has been done over hurdles, but lie is also capable over country and at Riccarton last August he easily won tho Lincoln Steeplechaso with 11.3. Winter Steeples Winner Everything has gono well with All Irish since be won tho Winter Steeplechaso at Ellerslie with 11.2, and, although ho has been, raised to 11.11, his prospects appear bright, as ho is a most accomplished steeplechaser, who is at his best over short courses. En Tour has been running consistently good races and will meet All Irish 61b. better than when lie ran second in the Winter Steeplechase, so that ho has to bo respected. Biform has also been racing well and in his last four starts has notched a win and three minor placings. He had 10.13 when he ran second in tho Bay of Plenty Steeplechaso last Saturday and, should appreciate the

drop t° 10.C. Lucidus is improving witli racing, but lie will require to come on 4 a good deal to turn the tables on Mnhnla and Biform, who beat him at Tauranga. Alaliala has an earlier engagement in the Andrew Kav Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, which she may keep, but she should have prospects if started, as she is oil the up-grade and is handily . placed with 9.6. Simint was never dangerous when he failed at his last start, which was in. the Waikato Steeplechase at To Rapa, but he is useful on his day. London ran below form at Tauranga and possibly his trainer may have been a little easy with him after his racing at the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie. London should be capable of a prominent showing if ho reproduces liis best. It is some time since Pyrenees has raced over country, but lie lias won a steeplechase, and in view of his success in the Campbell Hurdles on tho final day of the Great Northern meeting he will have a following. Chances ol Saint Musk •; Saint Musk is a dashing performer " over short courses and tho brush fences should suit him nicely. He will meet All Irish and En Tour on nine and three pounds better terms respectively than when they defeated him in the Winter Steeplechase, and in addi- * tion ho may bo assisted by the shorter distance. Smiling Thru' would appeal raoro if tho journey were longer, as - !l\e is a grand stayer. She was a creditable third'" in tho Great Northern Steeplechase and was expected to run prominently in the Winter Steeplechase, in which she fell at the second fence. Usually Smiling Thru' is a very safe jumper and it is raroly that she iuakes a mistake. Roxy was. going a good race when he fell on the hill in tho last round of tho Winter Steeplechase and_ is not without prospects if produced fit. Ureklaw is a promising steeplechaser, but ho may require more experience beforo he is equal to winning in this company. Electric Flash should be assisted by her quick jumping and is a possibility. Little Briton has performed creditably over hurdles, but may find the •company a little strong. Car Leaf failed at Tauranga, but he raced more kindly than in his previous attempts over country and seems to be making a little improvement. Fancies are likely to tako a wide range and some who may bo in demand are All Irish, Pyrenees, Erination, En Tour, Saint Musk and Biform. Orakau Hurdles Field The good fiat performer King ltey heads the field for the Orakau Hurdles, but he lacks experience as a jumper and may be steadied by his 11.10. As runner-up in the Great Northern .Hurdles, Jnness Lad commands respect and he may be in strong favour even though lie failed at his last start in the K emu era Hurdles when lie was probably feeling the effects of his hard race in the Northern. Alia Acrea fell at Ins last start, but is capable of a creditable performance. Gadger was unr luckily run off by another horse when he expected to win at Tauranga last Saturday and he should have a good opportunity here, as lie is very well. Lady England was going a good race in front when she fell in the Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie and she may be about to make a return to form. King Musk has, been working nicely and is not without a chance even though his form at the Great Northern meeting was below expectations. High Tea and Jewelled Girdle, who fell at Tauranga, are only beginners at hurdling and may lack the necessary • confidence in their jumping. Cappy and Chikara, second at Tauranga, are likely to run good races, especially the latter, who is verv (it. Torch has plenty of speed and General Ruse is a likely improver. He was placed at Tauranga, but his drawback, is that ho lacks confidence in his jumping and takes the fences very carefully. Once lie overcomes this ho' sliouid win among the hack hurdlers. Green Label, who fell, a nd Valueless did not impress at Tauranga and improvement will _ be_ reguired from Rotboon and Siwel if either '8 to succeed. It should be a good betting race and among those who may be fell supported are Inness Lad, GadRer, Chikarn, King Musk. Cappy and Lady England.
