FIFTY YEARS AGO

CONFIDENCE IN COLONY The increasing confidence of the colonists in the resources of New Zealand was referred to by the new Governor, Lord Onslow, in his address at the opening of the third session of tlio 10th Parliament of New Zealand. The following appeared in the Nkw Zealand fiKUAM) of June 21, 1889: "There are encouraging signs that the improvement which has taken place in the position of the colony will continue. The higher prices which have been obtained for its chief exports, while adding to the capital and increasing the income of the country, are restoring confidence in its resources, "which for a time seems to have been almost lost by many colonists. This is shown not only by the large amount of capital expended in industries which liave been found 'to"'be remunerative, but in the extent of land which has beoti .purchased from the Crown and, in parts of the colony, from large owners, who have subdivided their holdings into convenient areas and offered them for. sale. A largo addition has thus been made to the laud brought into useful occupation."
