HOCKEY TOURNEY

COUNTRY "WEEK GAMES IMPROVED CONDITIONS SECOND DAY'S RESULTS Except for a few light showers, the woniher romninod fmo during jilny in the annual country week hockey tourney for llio "\\"liito Horse Cup at rTolivin Park yesterday. However, after .Monday's rain I lie grounds were still muddy and play for the most part was ragged. Rodney A gave a sound display In its cnmo against Whangarei A, winning l>y three goals In one The Rodney right-wing. Phillips, played an outstanding frame and started some very fine movements. X. Wyatt. left wing, also made some Rood moves, but lie lacked adequate .support. The contrcforward, Ashton, played a good came, hut sound work on the part of Whangarei's goalkeeper saved the situation repeatedly. Whangarei was unable to pierre the opposing defence very often, and lack of teamwork, which was a fault of most of the teams, caused attacks to break down near the circle. Jn its gaino against Thames-Hauraki, J'iako had the upper hand and won decisively by seven goals to two. The centreforward, Spiers, played a splendid game, and succeeded in scoring four of the goals. The whole Piako forward line did well, and proved too strong for the opposing defence. Whakatane was unable to make much of an impression on Franklin A, and went down by four goals. Rodney B played well against Jiotorua in a fairly bright game. Rodney should have secured more goals judginjr by the number of good movements which broke down owing to weak play in the circle. An improvement in the slate of the grounds saw better hockey and cleaner stickwork displayed by the visiting ladies' teamti competing in the Provincial Cup tourney at Melville Park. Rotorua, which is again making an appearance in the tourney after an absence of several years, defeated Northern Wairoa decisively a fast, open game. Possessing a speedy forward line, Rotorua drew the defence repeatedly, Miss T. Curtis and Miss J,. Yates being outstanding. Waikato triumphed over Piako by the close margin of one goal. Waipa narrowly defeated Wlmngarei B, which appeared to be the stronger team. Miss J'. Petterson showed penetration and scored the two goals for Whangarei. ITauraki-Plains was fortunate to heat Rodney, which maintained a good pace throughout the game. llauraki-Plains was sound on defence but its positional play was weak.
