PROVISION OF £20,800 STREET IMPROVEMENTS OVERTAKING LEEWAY MANY AREAS TO BENEFIT As part of its policy of putting in hand u number of street works to overtalco the lag which occurred during the depression and subsequent years when expenditure had to be pruned, tlio Auckland City Council has provided in its estimates for this year a special grant of £20,800. The Works Committee vote'provided for a total expenditure of £204,180, as against £172,030. Of this sum, £115,900 represents the street allocation, the amount spent under this heading last year being £107,963. Orakei and Mission Bay Among the special works on the schedule is the improvement of certain roads and footpaths on the Orakei subdivision, for which £3OOO is provided. There is also £2OOO for the formation of College Road, on the south-east side of Lake St. John, in tho past, considerable quantities of metal from tho quarries near Mount Wellington havo had to be brought out by way of Abbott's Way, but tho formation of Collcgo Road, from Lunn Avenue, will give a moro direct outlet to tho waterfront suburbs to the east. Tho proposed extension of Nihill Crescent in tho Mission Bay area is to cost £2OOO. With tho subdivision of tho church property, Nihill Crescent was formed across tho tipper slopes of Mission Bay, but was not carried across tho valley to its possible eastern extremity. This is now to bo dono by linking it up with Selwyn Road near tho junction with Kohimarama Road. Yet another worlc to absorb £2OOO is tho extension of Vontnor Road through to Lueerno Road. Assisting Development A work necessitated by the recent purchase by the Government for housing purposes of a largo number of sections in tho area between Carrington Road and tho municipal golf links is the formation of Third Avenue, at a cost to tho council of £1920. This is an unformed and undedicated road, which is now to be formed to assist development. The council is bearing only a portion of the cost, tho Government and several other property owners finding tho balance. Two votes of £IOOO each havo been included to cover tho cost of sealing roads in tho Point Chevalier and Avondalo districts, and there is a further item of £IOOO for improving tho roads on tho Casey I'istate, Grey Lynn, whoro the Government Housing Department has erected a large number of houses. Road Sealing Works Among a number of road sealing works to bo put in hand are thoso on Reeves Road, off Mountain Road, and the Bullock Track, Western Springs. Reeves Road lies between tho grounds of tho Auckland Boys' Grammar School and the property of tho new Christian Brothers' School. This road has been formed with relief labour and is now to be sealed in bitumen, a grant of £SOO being provided for tho purpose. The Bullock Track is the steep road recently formed between the New North Road and the Old Mill Road, immediately to the cast of the Western Springs recreation ground. Sealing is to cost £4OO. Other miscellaneous works include tho erection of a new reinforced concrete bridge to replace tho old wooden bridgo over Oakley Creek at Bollard Avenue, close to the Now North Road. This is to cost £BOO.
