Tudor and 17th Century Composers

UNIVERSITY RECITALS

A programme of music of the Tudor period was played on the electric gramophone at Auckland University College last Sunday afternoon, when the first of a series of recitals utilising records from the Carnegie collection was given. The recital started with examples of music by the leading composers in the four chief schools of the 16th century, and comprised unaccompanied choral music by Palestrina, Byrd, do Lasso and Victoria. The second group consisted of several madrigals by Elizabethan composers, and the programme

concluded with descriptive, dance and instrumental music of the period, compared with, modern examples of thf> same type. Professor H. Hollinrake gave a brief historical introduction to • the programme, and at its conclusion conducted the audience in singing two simple Tudor madrigals.

The second recital in this series will be held at the college hall to-morrow afternoon, when examples of 17th century music, including organ music, opera, municipal and church music, descriptive music and solo songs, will be given. There will also be a 17th century concerto compared with a modern concerto
