[RESULTS ON SATURDAY PLAY AT MORRINiSVILLE TWO EVEN SENIOR GAMES Soft', grounds were generally experi©need for Rugby matches in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. Two very even matches were witnessed at Morrinsville, where .Old Boys, the leading team, suffered defeat for the first time. Ihe following results were forwarded bj Hekalp correspondents: — Morrjrtsvtlle.—Two remarkably even senior pomes were witnessed by an increased attendance of spectators at the Morrinsville Recreation Ground. The playing areas were soft ajid heavy after the recent rain. The leading team, Old Boys, suffered its firs defeat, coins down to lerriers b.\ to 11. On the adjoining ground Kereone ju>t managed to defeat the improving Lniterl team by 14 points to 13. As a rc»ult of the day's play the Old Boys. Ke.eone and terriers teams are now level with four points each at the conclusion of tho first round of the senior championship, and this should invest' the second round games with more interest than for many yea is. In the Kereone.United match Keneono made good use o_t the wind in the first spell to lead by It—•> nt half-time. United made gre.it e.forts t) secure the lead in the second spel, but found the experienced Kereone team, led by J. Leeson, former Waikato and New Zealand representative, too good in the last few minutes. Tries for Kereone were scored by T. Clarkin (2). J. Leeson and T. Wilton, one being converted by TV. Cameron. For United tries were scored by N. Dench and W. Solley, both being converted by W. Haycock, who also kicked a penalty goal. Mr. I. F. Vickers, of Te Awamutu, was referee. In the Old Boys-Terriers game the wind v favoured Terriers in the first spell, and the gitje led by 14—3 at half-time. Old Bo.vs made desperate efforts to overcome the deficit in the second spell. A. J- Aitken, the captain, ran through from half-way to score a great try, which he converted, and a minute later ho just failed with a free kick which would have made the same a drawhad it been, successful. Tries for Terriers were scored by R. Davidson, W. Jacobs and T. Hcc;is one of which Davidson converted. For Old Boys the scorers were J. Stewart (•..') and Aitken, the latter convert ing one try. Mr. T. Brown, o! Te Awamutu, was referee. Juniors: Waitoa, 10, Old Boys, 0; Kejfone, 5. Terriers, 3. Third grade: Kereone; 17, Old Boys, u; Terriers, 25, Waitoa. 0. Manukau Sub-Union.—Cold showers and a gusty north-westerly wind made conditions anything but pleasant when the final games in the first round of the championships were played. At Jellicoo Park, . Manurewa, Karaka continued its winning way in defeating the local side by r_> points to nil, tries being scored by Saunders, Hogan and Clarke. J. Wright, the winner's hooker, played an outstanding game, while for the losers, Gibbs and Hayes were always prominent. At the Show Grounds, Clevcdon, the local team had litttlc difficulty in defeating Papakura by 0 points to 3. There was little between the forwards, but the winners' backs were always superior. For Clevedon tries ■were scored by Rainger, W. Alexander and 5. Smith. W. Alexander was the best player on the field. He had good support from Pountney and Dow. J. Pickard kicked a penalty goal for Papakura. At Kingseat a much improved Hospital team held Drur.v tea draw, O-all. For Kingseat tries were scored by Simpson and B. Evans. Drury's points came from a try by J. Glasgow and a penalty goal by Sharplin. Aitkenhead, of Drur.v, was the best player on the day. Hamilton. —Showery weather was exnerienced in Hamilton when the Stag Trophy competition was continued. Raglan met Technical, the game ending in a draw, six points each. W. J. Phillips, the Waikato back, was the outstanding Raglan player. Stancich scored twice for Technical in the first spell and in the second spell Phillips and Paekau scored for Raglan. City suffered its first loss when it met Frankton, tho game ending 5 —3 in Frankton's favour. J. Ward, the Waikato fullback, played a fine game for Frankton, whilo K. The main game at Jubilee Park was played between Paengaroa and Papamoa. Within two minutes of the commencement Connell (Paengaroa) went over between the posts and converted his own try. McKenzie potted a goal for Pacngaroa. and shortly afterwards Ruebe followed up fast to score in the corner, half-time arrivintr with Paengaroa leading by 12 points to 0. Shortly after the resumption Satherly jicored a nice try for Papamoa and he also converted. Connell scored his second try for' Paengaroa. which won by 15 to 5. In the other match at Paengaroa, between United and Haneiuru. the former won by 10 to 3. Bennett scored two tries for the winner and Lillas jotted a goal, while Rangiuru's points came from a penaltygoal by Ahomiro. Juniors: Old Bo.vs. 9. Paengaroa. 6; Papamoa won by default. Third grade: Country, 12, Town, 0. Whakatanc.—Results in the Whakatane J?ufrby.: Sub-union's competitions were:— Senior- Taneatua, 11. Wlialta'rtne, 8; Wainiana, 15, Poroporo, G; Paroa, 30, Ruatoki, 0. Taneatua was lucky to defeat Whakatane, drawing level I.y a try scored when J. J. Best and another forward were off the seld, carrying an injured team mate to a car, and later getting a gift try when the fullback for Whakatsne fumbled uuder the posts. Waimana owed its win.over Poroporo to a fine pack of forwards, who disorganised the opposing set .if backs. Paroa, the competition leaders, heavily defeated Ruatoki, the weakest team, which was further handicapped through the absence of several players. Opotlkl.—The match' between City and Maori players was one of the best seen this season and the Jatter had their first loss for a long: time, City winning by n points to 3. The losing side was without some of its etar forwards and this proved a big handicap. Soon after commencing Lenine opened City's score with a penalty goal. A run by Leudrum saw Starkey take his short kick, and, evading the fullback, he touched down behind.:the post*. Lepine converted. City continued to have the better of play In the second spell and touched down after a scramble over the line. The Maori players scored an unconverted try. Lendruni was outstanding for City, while Lepine and Mackenzie played, solid games. I. \\alker, in the forwards, and J. Walker, in the backs, shojved up prominently for the .losers. Taupiri.—With a depleted forward line the Taupiri team was fortunate in defeating Hautapu by 14 points to 12 at Taupiri. Thamei.—The principal game at Rhodes Park was between Physical Training and the Maungakaramea jeani from Whangarei. A good crowd "witnessed a sparkling game, although rain squalls at times spoiled play, making the hall slippery. A feature of tho game was tho fine showing: of the three .Dovell brothers, playing for Physical Training. They displayed good understanding and penetration, which eventuated in the eldest brother, R- Dovell, scoring three fine tries. Physical Training won by 17 points (tries by R. Dovell, and Fitzpatrick. who converted his own try, and a penalty goal by Orr.v) to It (tries by J. I\ash find Boyd; J. Xasli converted one try and kicked two penalty goals). Tauranga.—The Tauransja Rugby Unions competitions were continued in dull weather. In the .senior grade a close gnme between Cadets and Te Puna resulted in Cadets gaining a last-minute victory by 11 points to 10. Te Puna led at half-time by .*> t0.3 and in the serond half added five poinls by means of a converted try. Cadets secured two tries, one just, before time and won by one point. The other senior game, between Rangatana and Matakana, was won by Rangatana by 16 to 5. Juniors: Cadets. 3, Wairoa, 0: Judea, fl, Mookoroa, 0; Te Puna defaulted to Rangataua? Tuakau led 10—3 at halftime, Tnakau's score being a try, a penalty goal, and a field goal by Barnaby. In the second spell. Whangarei.—Dust has been flying on the Rngbv fields in Whangarei this season, but normal football conditions prevailed on this occasion—rain, with soft grounds and a greasy ball. In the senior division the second round commenced and City,' , c, n K ea LJJ am 2' 3, while Hikurangi. 12. beat Old Bojs, 8. The teams are very evenly matched this season. City, which camo through the first round without a defeat, was lucky to beat. Kamo as its points were secured from two penaltv goals, one kicked by Roos and the other 'bv T. Abbott, while C. Brown scored for Kamo. Play was confined, largely to the forwards, although both sets ot backs put in some bright movements and the handling was good considering the greasy nature of the ball. In their match against Hikurangi, Old Boys made a great bid for a win, and, although their forwards about held their onm the backs were hardly tin to their opponents standard. Hewett, R. White. Pacroa.—By making the greatest use of its heavv forwards the West senior team defeated 'Hikutaia by 11 points to 0. The. match was played on a slippery field and the conditions did not suit the Hikutaia backs. Early in the same 11. Robinson sent out a long pass from a scrum to Clotworthy, who dodged through to near the posts. Brazcndale obtained the ball in the resultant melee and scored for Hikutaia. During a forward attack West was awarded a penalty and Hampton kicked a goal. From a line-out the ball travelled through the West backs to Harris, who kicked for the corner, enabling Robson to score. Late in the second spell Laverich dummied through and passed to his backs who carried on to the goal where Wallace dived across for West. Hampton converted. In a last-minute endeavour Hikutaia attacked strongly and following a passing bout Clotworthy secured from a scrum by the posts and went over. The game ended:— West., 11, Hikutaia, 8. Dargavllle.—A high wind reaching gale force and heavy rain made conditions most unpleasant when the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union's competitions were continued.
