PROGRESS IN BRITAIN CALL TO NATIONAL SERVICE MAGNIFICENT RESPONSE Independent Cable Service (Received May 28, O.'IO p.m.) LONDON, May 2S In the course of ,i speech at Butherglcn, Lanarkshire, tlio Minister of Civilian Defence, Sir John Anderson, said the response to the call for national service had been magnificent. It was} comparable with the early months of the Great War. Equipment secured included hundreds of millions of sandbags and 50,000,000 gas masks. The position would be far better in three months. The events of the autumn had made the peoplo realise that the monstrous doctrine of "might is right" was being re-established in Central Europe.
MILITARY TRAINING LEGISLATION IN FORCE REGISTRATION DATE FIXED (Received May 28, 0.-19 p.m.) British "Wireless LONDON, May 27 Before Parliament adjourned for the Whitsun recess the Royal assent was signified by Royal Commission to the Compulsory Military Training Act. The date for registration under tlio Act for young men between tlio ages of 20 and 21 has been fixed for to-day-week.
