BOTANICAL FIELD DAY
PARTY VISITS BIRKENHEAD Fifty-six members of the Auckland Botanical Society and several visitors from Hamilton held a field day at Birkenhead on Saturday. A welcome was extended on behalf of the Birkenhead Borough Council by Mr. .J. Prickett, who guided the party to the principal spots of botanical interest. The municipal nursery of native trees in Mokoia Road and the "short cut" overlooking the wharf—where 8000 native trees have recently been planted—-were inspected. The party visited Kauri Park, the outstanding features of which are the numerous kauris, toatoa and beeches, and some of the rarer ferns. Mis-; L. Cranwell, botanist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, described the trees as the visitors traversed the bush, and was assisted by Miss B. Molesworth. Miss M. Crookes and Dr. C. H. Tewslcy.
