May 24 The departure of the Yankee Clipper from Southampton on the return journey after the inauguration of Pan American Airways North Atlantic air mail Bervico lent special interest to a statement in the Houso of Commons by tho Under-Secretary for Air, Captain H. H. Balfour, on plans for the commencement of tho North Atlantio servico by a British operating company. Captain Balfour explained that its postponement had been necessitated by a desire in tho interests of operational safety and efficiency to give a 400 hours' flight test to the engines and to carry through certain alterations to tho fuelling system that had been found desirable as tho result of practical tests.
