CHRISTCHFRCH ANXIETY RESULT OF DRY SEASON SHARP INCREASE IN PRICES [bt telegraph—press association] OHBISTCHUHCH, Thursday An acute shortage of vegetables, which will, in the opinion of merchant, he perhaps the worst in the history of Christchurch, before the end. of tk winter, exists in the city. Inquiries made to-day revealed a remarkable increase in prices compared with former years. Extremely poor quality stocks i are at present being • submitted to auction rooms and there is ft very severe fall off in the quantity of vegetables usually relied oh to carry the market over the winter months. Merchants asserted that the shortage was mainly due to exceptional weather and the absence of moisture iia- the. soil. This had resulted in many pests attacking the crops: Wholesale prices quoted to-day trere in some cases already more than 100 per cent more than prices ruling at the same time last year, and these prices were being paid for vegetables of inferior quality. .
