CRICKET CONUNDRUMS

VIEWS OF CORRESPONDENT A correspondent, A. N. Williams, Onebunga, writes as follows:—"In your issue of May 18, under the title, 'Cricket Conundrums,' appeared the decision of two well-known umpires. [• venture to disagree with that decision. Should I hold a position of umpire at a cricket match and a similar happening took place I would give the second batsman out as lie was already off- his crease. Therefore, when the bowler diverted the ball on to the batsman's stumps the batsman was immediately run out, and the ball became dead before it was caught on the rebound off the stumps. "I have played cricket in the second XI. of a large English college, where a case came along in which my decision was given, i.e., the batsman who had left his crease was out. Other readers may differ in opinion, so may other umpires, but the M.C.C. ruling is not always right."
