FIFTY YEARS AGO
NAVAL ARMAMENTS RACE Naval construction formed a large part of defence programmes of the Powers 50 years ago. when rivalry in /and forces was matched by a struggle for supremacy oil the sea. Following is an extract from a leading article on the subject, published in the New Zealand Hehali! of May 8, 1889: "Never before was there general among the natior s so much navy building and maritime ambition. The statists tell us that no less than 60 now ships-of-war were launched amonj! them last year. Formerly most big. Continental nations cared to be great Powers only on the land —now they all aspire to be ihe same thing on thf ocean.
