SATURDAY'S MEETINGS CALLIOPE CLUB'S EVENT CONTEST FOR OSBORNE CUP The Calliope Harrier Club held its first race of the season for the Osborne Cup, starting from Devonport and running through Belmont, Takapunn and Glenfield to Birkenhead, a distance of 10 miles. The race was run in four laps under a teams system, four runners to each team. L. J. Lanigan finished ahead in the first lap, followed closely by G. Ambler, who returned fastest time for the lap, recording 14 m '29s. In tho second lap B. Short, taking over from L. J. Lanigan, further enhanced tho limit team's chances by just failing to break' tho record by nine seconds. Tho third lap saw McLean in the lead at tho start from F. Hardman, with N. Ambler chasing P. White. Ambler soon showed his superior ability, passing the leaders to place his team in first position for the first time in the race. His time of 13m 32s shattered the club record of A. E. Clayton, mado three years ago, by 58s. L. Collinge, with a good lead, took over from Ambler, F. Nicholson taking over from McLean, of tho limit team, in the final lap. All five bunched near tho finish and F. Nicholson, with fine staying power, staved off a challenge by W. Charman to win by 20yds. McGregor finished a close third. •

UNIVERSITY CLUB KOHN CUP SPRINT RACE Commencing from the Mount Roskill School, the University Harrier Club in its run on Saturday followed tho proposed course for the New Zealand University championship. The course was mostly field and tho going was. hard and fast due-to the absence of , rain. Twenty-five runners competed for tho E. S. Kohn sprint race, the result being:—W. de Lisle, 1; J. Cutler, 2; N. Stephenson, 3: M. Winiata, 4; A. S. Wilshere, 5; W. J. Pearson, 0.

After the sprint tho runners were divided into three packs, fast, intermediate and slow, and ran over a course of five and a-half miles. Winiata showed considerable improvement and he was outstanding for a firstyear man. The fast pack set an even but not fast pace over tho first four miles, with Chappell tho fittest and fastest man in the absence of Koefoed. Nelson, Collins, Stephenson and Harden were prominent. In the intermediate pack the runners were kept together by A. Ball. M. Winiata and J. F. de Lisle were tho best of this bunch, with J. Mackenzie, D. Woodhead and Jones closo behind.

In the slow pack J. Cutler, a newcomer, ran prominently, with Wilshero and N. Stephenson not far behind.

WESLEY CLUB About 35 members of the Wesley Harrier and Athletic Club took part in the club's weekly run from the Mount Albert Methodist Church. The six-mile trail, embracing the Mount Roskill and Sandringham districts, proved a good try-out for all members. Improvement was shown by A. Coad, O. Ridgeway, G. Dixon and A. Austin. EVENTS AT AVONDALE A Jarpre number attended the Lynndale Harrier Club's meeting at Avondale for a pack run over the Kclston Road course, a distance of six and a-nuarter miles. Three packs were sent out. Prominent runners in the slow pack were G. Ely, O. Young and M. White. In the intermediate pack J. Henderson ran well, C. Perrett, J. Dolan and A. Lowry also showing good form for so early in the season. The fast pack learned well. T. Collins, W. Briggs, R. Crompton and H. Goldfinch running on very strongly at the finish. PRESBYTERIAN CLUB There was an attendance of over 40 members at the weekly run of the Presbyterian Harrier Club, held on Saturday afternoon from the residence of Mr. A. E. Odlin, Mountain Road, Epsom. The runners were divided into three packs under the leadership of Niel, Hislop and Handcock. Starting from the Grammar School, tho trail was laid over Mount Eden across to One Tree Hill and back, via Cornwall Park and Manukau Roadl In the fast pack Laird ran particularly well, while Nicl and J. Hislop also ran consistently. Prominent in the intermediate pack, which kept up a fast pace for the whole distance, were Seagar and Irvine. In a large slow pack Turner and Handcock showed to advantage, while Rose and Birnie also ran well. BAPTIST CLUB The Baplist Harrier Club held a run from the Point Chevalier Baptist Church on Saturday. Three packs, fast, intermediate and slow, led by H. Ferguson. F. Greenman and A. R. Pcarse, respectively, left at five-minute intervals and followed an eight-mile trail consisting principally of road work. The fast pack maintained a brisk pace, combining with the intermediate pack, who were already ahead of the slow pack after about six miles had bpen covered. Fast and intermediate packs held a combined run-in of approximately one mile, the slow pack having a shorter run-in of half a mile. Detailed results were as follows: Fast and Intermediate Packs.—S. RUN AT ELLERSLIE The first run of the Ellerslic Amateur Harrier Club was commenced from the depot on the Ellerslie Reserve. 15 competing. Led by the club captain, F. Sharp, the runners set out over a course covering mainly the provincial championship areas, hut diverting at tho Remuera crolf links. The run-in, over a mile and a-half, resulted:— Seniors.—"F. Stanley. 1; M. K. Baker. 2: Frank Sharp. 3. Time, 7m 50s. Juniors.—J. Parsons, 1; B. Wallia, 2: E. Barker. 3. Time. !)m 30s. Other runners to show up prominently wero J. Carr and P. Sharpo in the seniors, and N. Bedford, G. Holden and W. Ryan in tho juniors.
