SHORTAGE OF REFEREES POSITION IN WHANGAREI Rugby football competitions were continued in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. Owing to ( the influenza, epidemic, there was a shortage of referees for the Whangurei Union's matches: The following results wore forwarded by correspondents of the Hkuald:— Whangarei —Rugby was played in bright weather and there was-a large attendance at Kensington Park. By scoring: 10 points. 13 of thorn in the first 20 minutes. J. Poos placed a part in City's victory by 20 to 10 oyer Old' Boys. Hamilton. —The City team made an auspicious re-entry into Hamilton senior Rugby football by defeating Technical Old Boys by 11 to 5 at Rugby Park, where the first nintclies for the Stag trophy were played. Much of the credit for City's win must so lo the forwards, who played well • throughout and were seen in some splendid loose rushes. The backs received few opportunities, owing to poor passes from the scrum, but they made several good runs. Putaruru.—Playing its first game in the Stag Cuj) competition, Putaruru was defeated by Cambridge United in a match played Glenshca Park. The score was 39 —11. Tho home pack, however, was too light to stand up to the onslaughts of Cainbridge kj the loose and tho tight. The pick of the Cambridge forwards were Hall and Hewart, while in the backs Baxter, Garland and the fullback, Haworth, played good games. For Putaruru, Taylor and Parris played well in the pack, and O'Brien and £>. Lory were the best of tho backs. For Cambridge tries were scored by Baxter (3) and Hewart (2). Thames. —Tho first round of the Thames Rugby Union's competition was continued in brilliant weather, and fast games were witnessed. There were a number of injuries, and A. McMillan, of Hui Mai. had his collarbone broken and was admitted to hospital. Seniors: Physical Training, .11 (tries by E. Dovell, R. Dovell and. Te Kuiti Club competitions opened on Rugby Park, the senior A attraction being West Coast v. Waitete. both new teams to the Maniapoto Sub-Union. The result was a draw of 8-all, after a hard-fought forward tussle, with occasional spurts of back play, especially by the Waitete backs. For Waitete, Quest scored a try, and another was gained by the forwards in a scrum on the line Branch converted one. Te Awamutu.—ldeal weather prevailed for the opening of the Rugby season. The main attraction was the Stair competition frame between Frankton and To Awamutu. which was won by Te Awamutu by 11 points to U after a close frame. Kereone, last year s senior ennnjpion side, led by J-. Leeson, former \Vaikato All Black, staged a Kreat recovery in the second half to draw with Terriers, three points all. Russell, the Waikato and Kereone halfback, who suffered a kick on the back five minutes after the game had started, and had to retire. This was a distinct handicap to the Kereone team.
