DRIVER'S NEGLIGENCE
DEATH OF YOUNG COUPLE REFORMATIVE DETENTION TERM [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Saturday In the Supreme Court William Alexander Tait, aged 29, truck driver, of Oamaru, who was found guilty of negligent driving near Mosgiel when a young engaged couple, Neil Harris and Vera Thomson, were killed in a smash as they were returning to the city on a motor-cycle, %vas sentenced by Mr. Justice Blair to six months' reformative detention. He was also disqualified from holding another driving licence for five years. The judge stated that he wqs dealing with the negligence charge alone. Tait, in according with the judge's directions, was also found guilty on counts of failing to stop and render all practicable assistance and of failing to ascertain whether the girl was injured. These counts will be submitted to a high Court in order that the soundness of the judge's directions to the jury may be tested and will bo treated as another matter entirely.
