CREW OF ENDEAVOUR REPORT FROM ADMIRALTY STATEMENT FOR COMMONS LONDON, May 4 Following the allegation of discontent among lower deck ratings of the surveying vessel Endeavour since she was commissioned for service in New Zealand two years ago, Mr. Geoffrey Shakespeare, Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, gave the House of Commons , details of. the ship's shore leave at Auckland and Russell.
Mr. Shakespeare said he was of the that the recreational facilities ■were excellent at Auckland, but there was no information regarding liussell. The survey was expected to be completed by June 1. A coal-burning ship was chosen because no oil-fired vessel was available. _ The 'offences in the Endeavour between June 1. 1937, and December 31. 1938, we're:—Deserted, ten seamen and five stokers; broke from ship, nine seamen and two stokers; cases of absence over leave, 80 seamen and 48 stokers; warrants for punishments, 14 seamen and eight stokers. Five deserters received 60 days' imprisonment, in lieu of detention. The . six who brfctke ship had five to 15 days in the cells, and five were deprived of good conduct badges, and there were other punishments for absence.
