TASMANIA'S DISCOVERY CELEBRATION IN 1942 Lfrom ouh own correspondent] SYDNEY. May 2 When Tasmania in 1942 celebrates her discovery o three centuries previously, she will honour the memory of the great "Dutch explorer, Abel Janszoon Tasman, and the event will assume international importance. "In 1942," said a speaker in a recent national radio broadcast, "it will be 300 vears since Tasman discovered the island to which his name has been given. Not that he discovered it was an island—he thought it was part of Australia proper, and as a matter of fact it -was not until 1798 that the existence was proved of a channel between [Tasmania and Australia. "Thus Tasmania rs going to celebrate no mere political centenary, but the SOOtb anniversary of Tasman's actual delivery of her from the limbo of prehistoric time."
