THE MIRACLE
This is too good a story to lose, although it happened in London. When a poor woman was brought into Court for some little offence tho magistrates did their best for her but could not lot her off with less than a fine of ten shillings. .She fumbled about in her dress and at last produced a golden sovereign. : Tho magistrates wero puz/Jed, and inquired about the preseot market price of gold. The sovereign, they were told, was worth 32s 6d, so they took the fine of ten shillings and gave back to tho woman 22s tid. This was moro than she couid understand. She paid a fine of ten shillings and yet had half-a-crown more at the end than she had at first. It was useless to explain to her that it, took, a world war, and a financial hurricane in tho money markets of the world to work this miracle; tho wo i nan went homo happy but puzzled.
