THE TIMBER-BUILT HOME It might be surmised that to-day the prospective owner of a home has difficulty in choosing his material for building. Although never before have we had such a large range of building materials to select from, we find that timber is still the popular choice for building. Contemplating the erection of a new home needs considerable thought and consideration. It is found that wooden buildings are warm in winter and cool in summer. As so often found, after a few years, a home requires to have alterations or additions made and it is only timber-built homes which lend themselves to remodelling easily. Wood, as a wall covering, has been approved by centuries of home-builders. Much use is made to-day of plywood panelling and a wonderfully artistic finish is obtained. In earthquake areas, wooden structures may be relied on to stand the most severe shocks better than any other materials. Just as in England the sturdy oak provided homes for the British people, so in New Zealand *we make use of the best-known of New Zealand timbers, namely: Kauri, rimu, totara and matai.
