TROUT FISHING

ROTORUA AND TAUPO REPORT BY CONSERVATOR FAILURE 'OF EXPECTED RUN [BT TELKGRA.PH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA. Friday

Reporting upon fishing conditions in the Rotorua and Taupo districts, the conservator of fish and game, Mr. R. Kean, states that the expected run of fish to the shallows and river mouths has not taken place. The fish in • the Ohau Channel have been difficult to get. Some fine fish have, however, been taken by persistent fishermen. A good rise of fish was seen at the Waiiti end of Lake Rotoiti, and some excellent fish have been taken there. Tho fish are beginning to congregate at the outlet of Lake. Tarawera, and some well-conditioned fish have been caught. The Green Lake has been fishing fairly well, and so has Lake Okataina when the wind has not been too strong.

The Waikato River at Atiamuri has been fair, and good fishing has been had

below the Huka Falls in the vicinity of Fulljames' Camp. Lake R.otoehu and Lake Rotoma have fished fairly well, with good conditioned fish up to 4slb. i The rivers in the Bay of Plenty have fished very well with the dry fly, and there appears to be no shortage of fish. The most successful flies in Rotoma have been the turkey and red, tamati, and hawk flies. The rain which fell between April 19 and April 25 did not improve tho fishing in the Tongariro River to the extent anticipated. The river rose rapidly, but fell again to below normal. A slight improvement was, however, noticeable, but no good run occurred. •A large percentage of the fish taken were young and of three to 3Jlb. in weight. The Delta is not fishing well, only a few fish being caught. The Tau-ranga-Taupo River fished well for a short time, but has again fallen back. No good catches are reported from Motuopa, Motuterc or Jellicoe Point. The report from the Taupo end of the lake is very much the same. The expected run of fish tsfter the rain has not taken place. Dry fly fishing in the vicinity of Pye's Camp has been good. i*- ' 1
