FAST SPRINTING

EPSOM TRACK DOINGS EIGHTEEN CARAT FIT FINE TRIAL BY LTTMINATE THREE BELLS STAYS WELL BY ABAYDOS -■ Under ideal conditions and on a '■> well-prepared and fast dirt track, C ood times were recorded afc Epsom yesterday, sprint honours resting with Eighteen Carat and Luminate, both of whom ran 1.5. Other smart half-miles were recorded by Silk Lady, 1.6; Stargum and Three 13ells, 1.6 3-5; Chaise, John's Last and Lucky Love, 1.7; Gold Circle, 1.7 3-5; and Bingen's Best, 1.8. Practically all work was done the reverse way. Beginning from the milo and a-haif and taking 35s to reach the first quarter, Eighteen Carat (C. M. Morrison) ran to the mile in 2,15, and, although tiring slightly in the last halffurlong, he registered the good time of •3.20. Eighteen Carat, who was unlucky in the Fergusson Handicap, is in fine form and his turn may not be far olf. When Chaise (P. Morrison) and Silk Lady (C. M. Morrison) had gone half a mile, Luminate (L. J. Mahonev) joined in behind, and, as Silk Lady took the measure of Chaise at the dis r tance, Luminate, who ran to the mile in 2.32, came on to win in 3.37. He paced freely, displaying rare dash in the run home. Silk Lady, who ran two miles in 4.55, finished on solidly to show 2.20 for the last mile. Chaise, who was not under pressure, went 4.56. He is making steady improvement.

John's Last in Saddle John's Last (L. Laver) set off in saddle at a merry clip, reaching the half-mile in 1.7 and tho 6ix furlongs' in 1.40 3-5. Ho was stopping in the last furlong, taking 2.16 to complete the mile. Post Haste (L. J. Mahoney) was also worked in saddle, but was unhoppled and did not go faster than a 2.32 rate over two miles. Stargum (W. Head), Three Bells (E. N. Kennerley) and Lucky Love (D. Cook) left as named for a two-mile task, and, although Lucky Love - and then Three Bells endeavoured to take . the lead, Stargum remained in front, to record 4.52, the last mile taking 2.18. Lucky Love was unhoppled and gave a sound display. Three Bells, who> ran the last mile and a-quarter in 2.51, did his work in easy fashion. Bingen's Best (J. Gamett), after a steady beginning, reached sis furlongs in 1.44 3-5, and, running on strongly, completed* a mile and a-quarter in 2.52 3-5. She has built up since coming north and on a firm track she should be useful. Clay Pot (J Paton) and Honey Pot (S. M. August) worked a mile and a-quarter, but over the last two furlongs Clay Pot came away to win easily in 3.0. Clay Pot shows distinct promise. Gold Circle Unhoppled Gold Circle (D. Cook) ran two-miles unhoppled in 4.53, the first half taking 1.19 and the last mile 2.19. The veteran is racing consistently and heavy tracks d 6 not hamper him. ■ Gold Kip (P. Morrison), Autumn Lu (G. H, Stubbs) and Canadian (C. M. Morrison) set out as named on a twomile journey, and at the mile in 2.36 Autumn Lu was several lengths in front, but Canadian headed her at the distance, to win in 4.56 and trot the last half in 1.11. He made one mistake. Autumn Lu gave her best display for some time and appears to be taking a fresh lease of life. She ran one half in 1.10 and the last mile in 2.22. Gold Kip, after a break, completed the distance in 5.0. Amywyn (E. N. Kennerley), unhoppled, worked a strong two miles, the last one comfortably in >2.32. She looks improved by her race last Saturday. Shrewdie and Morioiri were allotted steady pace work on the sand. Gipsy Light (G. Cole), free-legged, ran the last nine furlongs of two miles at a 2.30 rate, was not doing her best. Tumble _and Olax were given similar tasks. The latter has benefited from a lengthy spell. r Worthy Quest improving Munga Tangi (L. Laver) was worked in saddle, agcompanied by Fernbrook Lass (F. Davis). The latter thrives; on unhoppled and galloping work. Worthy Quest (G. H. Stubbs) could have improved on the 54s taken to run the last three of a nine-furlong effort. She has filled out and is staying on much better than formerly. Worthy Protection (P. Morrison) and the Ringtrue—Linnett the Great filly (.T. McKendrick) worked a mile in 2.35. the last half in 1.12. Worthy Protection may require time to reach racing condition. • .- . - Singing Bird (J. Mahoney)*, Ringstone (W. Fleming) . and Fisher (A. Paton) were given a sound task tin the sand, Fisher doing better -than the other two in the final. stages. Singing Bird appears to havo derived some benefit from racing at Awapuni. Star Pronto, Musketeer and Vanora were restricted to light tasks.

SAPLING STAKES HIGHLAND SCOTT BEST FORM BY ABAYDOS Auckland two-year-olds remaining in the New Zealand Sapling; Stakes, to be run at the Ashburton Trotting Club's June meeting, are Charles Rex, Bonniedene, Josette and a Ringtrue—Kewpie gelding, who is owned by Mr. W.' P. Holmes, who also races Bold Venture. Charles Rex, Bonniedene and Josette, raced in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, won by Highland Scott, with Josette securing second place. Charles Rex and Bonniedene -won matinee races, while Josette had further racing experience at New Plymouth and Palmerston North. Three Tens and Durability also raced on the circuit, and shaped creditably, Threo Tens gaining a second at Awapuni. On returning South, Durability was placed at Timaru. The Auckland classic winner. Highland Scott, added the Timaru Nursery Stakes to his list, and his record of two wins in two starts, as well as an easy matinee victory, suggests that the TJ. Scott colt will be a firm favourite. Betty Boop, who was second at Timaru, is by Jack Potts—Disappearance, while Durability, who is thought to have prospects in the Ashburton classic, and is one of the biggest two-year-olds in training, is by Jack Potts from Endurance.

WAIKATO TROTS Acceptances for the autumn meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club close with Blomfield and Company, Auckland, at 5 p.m., or with the secretary, Mr. G. Jew, Hamilton, at 8 p.m. today.
