CHINESE IMMIGRATION Early mention of the "yellow peril" in the colonies and the reaction of China to restricted immigration is contained in the following paragraph, ■which appeared in the New Zealand Herald of May 5, 18S9: — The British Government has intimated to the Government- of Victoria that a protest has been received from the Chinese authorities against the colonial measures restricting the immigration of Chinese. Mr. Gillies states that tho objections made by China to the proposed colonial legislation on the subject are not so serious as at first anticipated they would be, and he believes that they will be overcome by concerted action of tho colonies."
