FALSE PRETENCES
MONEY AND GOODS OBTAINED . MAN GUILTY ON FIVE COUNTS Fire charges of obtaining money and ;goods 5 of a total value of £l7 10s, by :false pretences between February 3 and ■February 25, were preferred against I'Archibffld Hardlev Eglinton Seton, aged 55, accountant, in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Callan yes- ' terday. who was not represented by counsel, pleaded not guilty. !Mr. V. R. Meredith prosecuted. Mr. Meredith said accused was •charged* with issuing a series of valuer , less cheques or drafts in the form of ■cheques to various tradespeople in -Auckland. He subsequently pawned rgorne of the goods. Accused, in a statement from the 'dock, said another person was to have paid in funds, on accused's instructions, ■to the bank, but'had not done so, and therefore had failed accused. In that regard accused had been a victim or circumstances. Accused said -Its was fairly, widely known in the city and had too much at stake to .jeopardise. He wOuld not victimise the public. He had : "been in business and his credit was good. His business had been senously affected by the import restrictions. ... The iurv, without retiring, gave a -verdict of guilty on all counts. Accused yras remanded for sentence.
